I confess to a particular reason for including Carlyle, despite his lack of friendship with Eliot, because when I started saying, around age eight, that I was going to be a writer, my mother said, âLike Thomas Carlyleâ, who, I was given to understand, was an illustrious ancestor of ours. I soon found out that was not strictly true, as he was actually her great great great uncle, so there was no direct line (and he did not in fact have a direct line of his own â due, at least in part, to his alleged impotence), but surely we must share some genetic material? Iâm sure it is my grannyâs nose I see in a silhouette of Carlyleâs mother, my granny who always carried peppermints to relieve the dyspepsia from which she, like Carlyle, suffered.
